Gargoyle Art by Yours Truly
I started watching Disney’s “Gargoyles” on Disney+, and I enjoy it so much, I decided to look up the history of gargoyles in real life. I could look up behind-the-scenes stuff on the show, but I don’t want to accidentally spoil myself for any of the plot developments. Still in early season 1. But I learned so many different things about the real-life gargoyles! So I was inspired to draw some of the ones I liked the looks of best on the internet.
This was the first one I did, and you can buy this guy on Amazon! The paper is “recycled” from an old job. I draw on the backs of the old menu pages that I would otherwise have to throw out into the trash. I have so much of the paper. When I was a child, my father would do something similar, and I would do math problems on the backs of old pipeline scheduling papers. Anyway, I really liked how I did his nose. I also used a pencil that does not erase well. I didn’t have any other eraser, though. So all of the claws on my gargoyles look a little off, and some of the others have smudges on them that are kinda ugly but oh well. I think this one is my favorite, though I’m not sure I’d buy the actual reference I used.
Now this guy was fun! He’s supposed to be smiling, like his reference picture here on Amazon. He unfortunately suffers from the blemishes that my eraser left, but he’s still a cheery guy! It’s as though he’s listening to you tell a story that he finds quite amusing. I could have colored these guys, but I was worried I’d ruin it if I tried to color it as its original grey color and I really wasn’t sure what other colors to use. So I decided to just let them be pencil drawings with shading.
I almost screwed his wings up, and he’s got a bit of a silly face, but I still like him. I did his nose (muzzle?) better than the second one’s. For some reason, I can’t find the reference’s source because my web history isn’t showing me what website it was. If I find it again, I’ll update this post and provide the link.
Update: Here’s the source!
I did track this reference back down. It’s another one on Amazon. I like his underbite, but I think the actual gargoyle has more teeth than I actually drew. And I was very amused by how many abs I had to draw.
I know I’m not the best artist, but you never get better if you never try! Sometimes the drawing bug bites, and I just have to do my best, even if it doesn’t look like what’s in my head.
I’m also going to include some of the videos I watched to learn more about the history of real gargoyles! It was really cool to learn that the first gargoyle was actually a dragon — and that explains why the humanoid ones have wings!
Here we go: Guardians of Stone: The Untold History and Legends of Gargoyles, How Gargoyles Became Monsters | Monstrum, The art of Gargoyles, The historical origin of Gargoyles, and Why Notre Dame’s Gargoyles Are More Than Art.
I’m going to continue watching Disney’s Gargoyles until I finish it. Then I can look up behind the scenes stuff! In the meantime, I’ll continue to write and also read and write the book reviews. Have fun, and if you also draw any gargoyles, be sure to share it with me!
